Diesel pump to solar: what you would save

What you spend running a diesel pump today, and what a subsidised solar pump would replace.

Your details

Count only the days the pump actually runs.

Today's price at your nearest pump.

Your estimate

Diesel you would stop buying each yearEstimated

₹69,255 – ₹1,41,075

What the pump costs you in fuel over a season, at the price you entered. A solar pump removes that running cost entirely.

₹69,255₹1,41,075
Diesel burnt
729 – 1,485 litres / year

At the hours and days you entered.

You would pay
₹90,000 – ₹1,20,000

Your share of a PM-KUSUM solar pump, after subsidy.

Payback
0.6 – 1.7 years

Against your own share, not the full project cost.

First year position
₹-50,745 – ₹51,075

Diesel avoided less what you pay, in year one.

Solar array
7.46 kW

Sized for a 5 HP pump.

Litres saved
1,080 litres / year

Fuel you no longer have to buy, carry and store.

The subsidy split is indicative.

Central and state subsidy shares under PM-KUSUM are set by scheme guidelines and state orders that change. The share shown here is indicative. Your sanctioned amount is confirmed by NREDCAP when your application is processed.

  • Your pump’s actual fuel consumption, which varies by make and condition
  • Borewell depth and discharge, which decide the array you need
  • The state subsidy share, confirmed by the nodal agency at sanction

A cost you already pay, every season

Diesel is the clearest case in solar, because the money is already going out. A farmer running a 5 HP pump through an irrigation season is spending a figure they can recognise, and the comparison is against that rather than against an abstract return.

The payback here is measured against your own share after the PM-KUSUM subsidy, not the full project cost. That subsidy split is indicative until the nodal agency confirms it, which is stated on the result and explained in more detail on the pump subsidy calculator.

Questions about this estimate

Is the payback against the full system cost?

No, and deliberately so. It is against your own share after the PM-KUSUM subsidy, because that is the money that actually leaves your hand. Quoting payback on the gross project cost would understate the case considerably for no good reason.

Why do I have to enter the diesel price?

Because it moves constantly, and a price baked into the calculator would quietly falsify every result the week after it was written. Entering today’s price at your nearest pump keeps the comparison honest.

Will a solar pump run as long as my diesel pump?

On an average day, usually yes for the hours that matter. But solar follows the sun: you get more pumping in summer and less in monsoon, and nothing at night. If you irrigate on a fixed schedule regardless of weather, that difference matters and we should talk it through.

What about maintenance?

A solar pump has no fuel to buy, carry or store, and far fewer moving parts than a diesel set. The trade is that the array needs cleaning and the controller is an electronic component that can fail. Over a season the running cost difference is large; over twenty years the maintenance profile is simply different.
