Why the residual bill is shown, not hidden

It would be easy to present solar as ending your electricity bill. It does not, and a calculator that implied otherwise would set up a disappointment at the first bill after commissioning, which is the worst possible moment for a customer to feel misled.

What solar removes is the energy charge on the units it displaces. Fixed charges stay, and night-time consumption still comes from the grid unless you add storage. Off-grid and hybrid systems are what change that, at a cost. The honest figure is a much smaller bill, not no bill.

Questions about this estimate

Why does my bill not go to zero?

Two reasons. Fixed charges are levied on the connection regardless of how many units you draw, and the units you use after dark come from the grid because the panels are not producing. A rooftop system without storage reduces the energy charge; it does not remove the connection.

Does this account for the Telangana slab structure?

Yes, and it matters more than most people expect. Telangana re-rates the whole month when consumption crosses a category boundary, so a household cut from 250 units to 190 does not just save 60 units at the top rate: the remaining 190 re-rate downward too. Andhra Pradesh bills as one continuous telescopic ladder instead.

What happens to the units I export?

Under net metering they are credited against what you import, but at the net-metering rate rather than the retail rate you avoid by using them yourself. That is why a unit consumed as it is generated is worth more than a unit exported, and why oversizing has diminishing returns.

Will my bill keep falling in later years?

Your solar generation declines very slowly, while grid tariffs have historically risen. The projection here does not assume a tariff rise, so it is the conservative case: if tariffs go up, the gap between the two bills widens.
