Solar street light installation and area lighting

Self-contained lighting for roads, campuses, yards and public spaces. No trenching, no cabling, no metered connection: each pole is its own power system.

What a solar lighting unit consists of

Every unit combines four components on a single pole: a photovoltaic panel, a battery, a charge and lighting controller, and an LED luminaire. The controller manages charging, protects the battery from over-discharge, and handles dusk-to-dawn switching, usually with a configurable dimming profile for the later part of the night.

Because there is no interconnection, a fault affects one pole rather than a circuit, and installation does not require civil work beyond the foundation.

Where it is used

Village roads and public spaces

Panchayat street lighting where extending a distribution line to each pole is disproportionate to the need.

Campuses and institutions

Schools, colleges and hospitals lighting internal roads and pathways without adding to a metered load.

Industrial premises

Yards, perimeters and parking areas, where lighting is a security requirement and grid extension is awkward.

Farms and remote sites

Approach roads, sheds and equipment areas with no supply at all.

Specifying a system that actually performs

Solar street lighting is a category where underspecified equipment is common and the failure is delayed: a unit with an undersized battery works for the first few months and then starts going dark before midnight, usually once the panel has accumulated dust and the battery has taken its first seasonal knock.

The specification should state, explicitly — most street and area lighting is quoted in 30W, 60W or 100W tiers, so compare offers against the same wattage before comparing price:

  • Luminaire wattage and delivered lumens, not just wattage.
  • Battery capacity and chemistry, with expected cycle life.
  • Panel wattage relative to that battery, so it genuinely recharges in a day.
  • Autonomy: how many consecutive poor-weather days the unit is designed to survive.
  • The dimming profile, if output is reduced late at night.

We quote against those figures so that offers can be compared honestly, which matters most in tendered procurement where the cheapest bid frequently hides the shortest life.

Procurement and references

Institutional buyers usually need reference installations and a serviceable warranty position before they can raise an order. Completed work is listed on our projects page, and the terms we stand behind are set out on the warranty page. For panchayat and government buyers procuring through GEM (the Government e-Marketplace), we can quote against the same wattage, lumens and battery specification listed there.

Common questions

How does a solar street light work?

Each unit is self-contained: a panel charges a battery during the day, and a controller switches an LED luminaire on at dusk and off at dawn. There is no external supply and no cabling between poles, so each light operates independently of the others and of the grid.

Do solar street lights need a grid connection?

No. That is their main advantage for roads, yards and campuses. There is no trenching, no cabling between poles, no meter and no monthly electricity charge, which is what makes them viable in locations where extending a supply would cost more than the lights.

What happens after several cloudy days?

Systems are specified with a margin of battery capacity beyond a single night, and most controllers can dim output overnight to extend runtime. How many consecutive poor days a unit survives is a design decision that should be stated explicitly in the specification, not assumed.

What maintenance do solar street lights need?

Panel cleaning is the main routine task, since a dust-covered panel will not fully recharge the battery and the fault shows up as lights failing early in the night. Batteries are the wear component and will need replacement within the life of the pole and luminaire.
